In-school programs

  • Tutor students in various academic subjects (especially science, math, and English) during school.
  • The after-school program is designed to provide students with support through a computer-based learning program.Details for this program (and availability for volunteers) are pending.
  • Participating students are in 9th through 12th grade.
  • Many Kaimuki students are from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or from immigrant families, with many other languages spoken on campus/at home.
  • The FAFSA Assistance Project started here in Spring 2006, with Professor Richard Kido’s Accounting students helping families with college financial aid. Dr. Peggy Friedman’s class helped with marketing.

Coaching in various academic subjects

Please note: There is minimum commitment required for this site; 25 hours of service must be completed in a regular weekly schedule.

In-class: If available, you can be paired with a student/teacher in a classroom that matches your Service-Learning course (esp. algebra, geometry and reading).

Other opportunities for service are available
There are a number of special programs relating to STEM. Your classes can come up with fun, engaging activities to do with the Kaimuki students on their campus or on ours. Contact Candice Sakuda if you’re interested in developing these kinds of lessons.

In-class placements are available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m.

There is an after-school homework/tutoring program, scheduled for Mondays & Wednesdays from 2:25 p.m.; Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1:40 p.m. 1-2 hours per shift. However, emphasis is placed on in-class placements because Kaimuki students may not regularly be attending the after-school sessions for help. You may inquire about their needs in any given term.

Note in your email why you want to work at the school and if you have any relevant special skills or interests.

Mrs. Shimokawa will contact you to set up an interview and match you with a position at the school based on your availability and skills. She will also be your general point of contact during your service experience. Orientation and training take place individually or in small groups.

Requirements: TB clearance, email application, interview. Casual-professional dress code.

Faculty note: Special projects could include early college awareness activities, helping with outreach to parents, assessment project.
